Teeth, Jaws and Airway: Form and Function Grow Together

Teeth do not exist in isolation. They sit between the tongue on the inside and lips and cheeks on the outside.

A lifelong balance

Repeated forces from:

  • tongue posture
  • swallowing
  • lip seal
  • cheek pressure
  • breathing pattern

help create the functional environment around the dental arches.

Why this matters

Crowding, narrow arches, altered bite and jaw relationships may sometimes be part of a larger pattern rather than isolated dental findings.

That does not mean every crooked tooth is caused by breathing.

It means the airway and oral function deserve a place in the examination.
