What matters is not how it looks, but what the tongue can do.

A tongue-tie is a restriction involving the lingual frenum beneath the tongue. What matters is not simply how it looks — but what the tongue can actually do.
Function matters
Ask whether the tongue can:
- elevate comfortably
- reach and maintain an appropriate resting position
- move freely during swallowing and speech
- function without excessive compensation
Why can it be missed?
Some people adapt remarkably well. Compensation may hide restriction for years.
A visible frenum is not automatically a problem
Everyone has a frenum. The question is whether mobility and function are restricted.
Become AirwayAware
Never diagnose a tongue-tie from a photograph alone. Appearance is only one part of the assessment.
Get checked: If tongue movement is clearly restricted or symptoms suggest functional limitation, seek an appropriately trained professional evaluation.
