Eight Hours in Bed Does Not Always Mean Restorative Sleep

Why enough hours in bed can still leave you flat.

Eight Hours in Bed Does Not Always Mean Restorative Sleep

You can spend eight hours in bed and still wake as if the night never restored you.

Sleep is more than duration

Good sleep needs continuity and adequate breathing. Repeated effort to breathe, snoring, brief arousals or breathing pauses can disturb sleep even when you do not remember waking.

Clues may appear in the morning

  • heavy or foggy head
  • dry mouth
  • headache
  • needing repeated alarms
  • feeling unrefreshed
  • wanting to sleep again soon after waking

And during the day

Poor-quality sleep may show up as sleepiness, poor concentration, irritability or low energy.

Become AirwayAware

Do not ask only, “How many hours did I sleep?” Also ask, “How did I feel when I woke?”

Get checked: Persistent unrefreshing sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, snoring or witnessed breathing pauses deserve assessment.
